Only 1 more week until our 1 year anniversary. Want to know the smartest thing I did for my wedding? Not buying a 'wedding dress'.

Look around my blog. I'm not totally unwilling to spend money on nice things, but I couldn't justify spending upwards of 1,000 dollars on a dress I'd get to wear once in my life. I'm not saying it is bad if you do, but I couldn't imagine that. Plus, when I tried on wedding dresses, I'm fairly certain the woman didn't appreciate me mocking many of the dresses she pulled (one had a bubble hem and I wobbled back and forth singing 'weebles wobble but they don't fall down!). Once we were done there, I pranced over to the bridesmaids section, found this beauty, and voila! Wedding dress!

The dress cost right around 200 dollars and is from Wtoo and is a simple bridesmaids dress. Most bridesmaids dresses come in white, ivory, and similar colors. My dress is a color called 'candlelight'.
I input a lot of my own style into the wedding. The heels are from BDG via Urban Outfitters and you've seen them on many bloggers, from Marisa of Shades of Monet to Jessica of the Midwest Muse. I've even worn these shoes on the blog a few times. My veil is from Tessa Kim on Etsy. And I did all of my makeup myself and my close friend Katie did my hair and all of the other girls.

I think my signature Ray Ban clubmaster sunnies were a good choice too!

every bride is different and you have to stay true to yourself regardless! I think your whole get up really suits you... you look so cute and happy and the dress is so flattering on you!

I love the idea of a shorter wedding dress. It's such a fun variation of the classic floor-length gown. You looked absolutely stunning on your big day! Of course, you are beautiful in every photo, but you are radiating happiness in these photos! And I love the shoes, so cute!

I like your headpiece, and your corgi is a cutie!
ReplyDeleteJust posted about my wedding too! I did the same thing...designed a dress and had a friend sew it because I just couldn't stomach paying $800-$2500 for a gown! My whole wedding had to be on a $3000 budget, so I couldn't have spent that much anyways. Happy anniversary to you two...hope your second year (and every year after) are filled with blessings :)

You look gorgeous in that dress! I always wanted the big dress, and I'm mostly unwilling to spend a lot on nice things. Haha. But it was one of those things where I knew I wouldn't pay $1000 for a dress but if I fell in LOVE with one somewhere under that - I was going to do it no matter what. And I'm glad I made that choice. :) It was still a lot to spend, but worth it to me.
ReplyDeleteToday is our 2 year anniversary. :)
you sure rocked that wedding dress! every bride is different. but what's important is taking charge and going for what you like and what makes you comfortable than just follow the norm. it's your wedding after all. the shades even upped your "cool" factor. your wedding definitely looks so fun! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post and a great dress! I came over here from Little Slice of Special: that was also a great post :)
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to following your blog!

I completely agree with you. Do I want to look pretty for my wedding? Of course! Do I want to spend 1000 euros or more on a dress I'll wear just once in my life? HELL NO!
ReplyDeleteI am also considering tea length and more casual dresses for my wedding and yours looks amazing!
Life is a romantic poem
Well, hello, gorgeous! Your wedding dress is va-va-va-VOOM. Love it.

I'm so impressed that that's a bridesmaid dress! You look absolutely chic and elegant. Even though I'm not marrying anytime soon, getting a reasonably priced dress that I can possibly wear over again is important!
ReplyDeletecongrats
ReplyDeleteWow I can't believe that you didn't buy that as a "wedding dress". That's incredible! My dress was around $400... I couldn't imagine spending more than that. When I watch SYTD I don't know how people spend 5 to 10 grand on one dress. It's nuts! I could buy a car for that and I'd get a lot more use out of it! I just found your blog and have loved looking around and getting to know you better. I'm excited to follow along!

I love how amazing your wedding was! This dress is so pretty! I could never imagine a bridesmaid wearing it. And I'm totally there with you, a bridal gown that costs like 5939539538500 dollars is insane.
ReplyDeleteYOu look gorgeous in this dress, official bridal or not. Actually, if you are a bride, it is bridal- the end. The hairpiece is especially fabulous! More photos?

I get married next month and I chose a retro style gown. My seamstress will chop off the ballgown length to make it tea length, and when I'm sick of that she'll make it knee length. I can't wait to re-wear my gown this year!
ReplyDeleteKatherine, you looked gorgeous on your wedding day! I love that dress and usually I am not a fan of short dresses for a bride. But this one really suits you and your style. I couldn't have pictured you in a bubble hem wedding gown! You made the right choice.
ReplyDeleteWow... I would never have know you got this from the bridesmaids section. I love pictures from your wedding, you looked amazing. I love that dress on you!

ReplyDeleteI think you look absolutely beautiful, and I love how you chose for your dress to be so simple, yet lovely at the same time. Cutting costs is always a good thing and you still look like a million bucks! :) Congrats on the 1 year anniversary!
